My daughter recently memorized and read aloud the poem "O Captain, my Captain" by Walt Whitman. I was moved almost to tears. The poem, written contemporaneously by one of America's all-time greatest poets, contrasts the exultation of the end of the Civil War with the despair of President Lincoln's assassination. Dare I say the rhythm has as much to do with my emotional response as do the words. Chances are you have an opinion about whether learning poetry by heart is worthwhile or not. Read the following article "Memorize that Poem" from The NYTimes and click on the YouTube link below to hear this moving poem read aloud. Then let me know what you think.
